ONLINE VOLUNTEERING IN BRAZIL
The FIRST broad-ranged ACTION of ONLINE VOLUNTEERING IN BRAZIL happened in April this year. The movement which summoned young bloggers to participate in a single cause, digital inclusion, marked the beginning of various volunteer actions yet to be carried out by Internet users, with the support of the Institute, which has been opening doors to volunteers for the past 10 years.
An appealing little button, placed in blogs already affiliated, announced the VOLUNTEER BLOG MOVEMENT and invited internet users to visit the homepage hosting the event.
Inspired by the Dia Global do Voluntariado Jovem (The Young Volunteer’s Global Day), the Instituto Voluntários em Ação (Volunteers in Action Institute), IVA/SC launched the action into the on-line universe, directed exclusively to fighting digital illiteracy.
Blogs interested in the cause wrote posts for the three days of activities (April 25, 26 and 27), in which the main focus was to teach people, with little or no computer skills, to perform a task on the computer, from saving an archive or creating a folder to using e-web photo tools – every information counted.
The cause greatly aroused the interest of these opinion leaders; 470 blogs registered voluntarily and more than 1,000 posts regarding digital inclusion were submitted.
The participation of the blogger’s community in the Volunteer Blog Movement surpassed the expectations of the Instituto Voluntários em Ação (Volunteers in Action Institute) and the cause of digital inclusion gathered the greatest number of posts ever seen – more than 1,000 posts about the subject which will certainly reach thousands, maybe millions, of new internet users.
